The Church has always believed that Jesus was not just a very good man, but the Son of God; that he did not begin his life when he was born into this world, nor end it when he ascended into heaven; but that he came from God, and returned again to his Father’s presence. Indeed the whole of Christianity stands or falls on what is called the divinity of Christ, that Jesus was and is the Son of God.
However, Christians believe that Jesus is at the same time both the Son of God and the son of Mary, fully human and fully divine. One of the earliest Christian writers, Athanasius said, “ He became what we are, that we might become what he is.” Or a more modern writer C. S. Lewis said something similar, “ The Son of God became man, to enable men to become sons of God.” And by that he meant of course men and women for Jesus came to be the Saviour of the whole world, so that to all that receive him, that believe in his name, he gives the right to become children of God. (John 1:12)
