Why should I go to church?

The popular view of the Church, especially that portrayed on television, is that it is outdated, irrelevant, perhaps even reactionary. The wet TV vicar, the thermometer outside saying how much is needed for the tower fund and the unkempt churchyard are common images. But for every Church you might find like that, there are many more which are the opposite, that are alive with the reality of the living God.

These are places where God’s love can be found in the warmth of the fellowship and in the liveliness of the worship. Here people are concerned about the world we live in and sincere in wanting to discover what it means to be a follower of Jesus today.

Going to Church regularly allows us to learn more about the Christian faith and deepen our commitment to God’s ways. For many people the most important part of their week is when they meet with other Christians in church and perhaps share with them in Holy Communion, sometimes called the Eucharist (a word which means thanksgiving).

A theologian called Karl Barth said: “ If we wish to hear the call of Jesus, we must hear it despite the Church.” Sadly that might be the experience of some people, but for many others it is through being part of a church that they discover what life is really about.
