Why is religion so dull?

It all depends of course what you mean by religion and what you mean by dull? There can however be something drab, grey and dull about formal religion. Church buildings can be cold, uninviting, dull or even forbidding. Church services can seem lifeless, the people who go appear unwelcoming and the message preached seems irrelevant to the real life of the world outside the Church. But that is not always how things are when you look a little deeper.

Certainly nobody would call Jesus Christ dull; people crowded just to be with him and great numbers would travel to listen to him and to think about the life-giving message he proclaimed. The Christianity you read about in the New Testament is far from dull and the early Church was a community throbbing with life, joyful, thrilling and energetic. It was feared, hated even - but never ignored!

If today the Church has allowed itself to become dull, it deserves to be criticised. But where the Church allows the Holy Spirit to lead and guide, it is often dynamic, engaging and attractive. Jesus said that he came to give life to those who received him – life in its fullness (John 10:10).
