A spirituality for our time? Tools for the 21st Century Christian

Saturday 4th October 2008

Led by the Anglican Sisters from the Sisters of Bethany, Southsea

Living the Christian life today isn’t easy, is it? How can we come closer to God in the midst of great busyness in the home, workplace and environment? If our computer crashes, can we prevent our halos from doing the same?

We will explore tools that can help you to holiness today, uncovering a little known strand of Christian spirituality that has been described as “hidden treasure”.

Spirituality is the energy that drives life - it’s what makes you get out of bed in the morning, decides what you do in the evenings and weekends.

It informs the choices you make. It enlarges your heart for relationships. It seizes your imagination, brings sorrow yet amazes you with joy and gratitude. It affects everything …and, if you’re a Christian, that includes your relationship with God.

The unique spirituality we shall be exploring was created by St Francis de Sales and is rooted in life in the world. It is for everyone, for all of us are called by God to a life of holiness. So come and see what this spirituality can mean to you.

This day will be led by Anglican Sisters from the Sisters of Bethany, Southsea and the Community of St Mary the Virgin, Wantage, alongside some of their Associates (lay members of their Communities). Both Communities follow the spirituality of St Francis de Sales.

Venue and time: Portsmouth Cathedral, 10.00am-4.00pm
Cost: £7.50

The New Monasticism-the spirituality of Taizé and Iona

Saturday 1st November 2008

Led by Anne Leonard, Parish Priest and the Rev Dr Peter Lippiett

Many people have heard of Taizé and Iona...the places, the people, the prayer. This is a day to explore their differing spiritualities and experience their ways of prayer. We’ll also consider the post-modern phenomenon of ‘the new monasticism’, and the way it’s proving a fresh expression of church in Europe and worldwide — setting it in the context of the monastic tradition which has so shaped Christian spirituality and prayer across the centuries. Can this be a way of shaping contemporary Christian following.

There will be input, reflection and the opportunity to experience other ways of prayer—including Taizé and Iona chants and some Iona circle dancing!

Ann Leonard is Vicar of St Peter’s and St  Andrew’s Hayling, and an associate member of the Iona Community.

Peter Lippiett is Spirituality Adviser in the Diocese of Portsmouth, and a member of the Third Order of the Society of St Francis.

Venue and time: Portsmouth Cathedral, 10.00am-4.00pm
Cost: £7.50
