New parents - start here

  • Your baby is unique... there is no one like him or her in the whole world.
  • Right from the start a baby needs lots of cuddles.
  • The love you give to your baby reflected back to you.
  • The more time and attention you give, the more your child will respond to you.
  • Don't be worried if you don't have strong feelings of love at the beginning.
  • As you care for and protect your baby these feelings come.
  • Always hold your baby when you are feeding because it is safer and she needs to feel secure. If you're breast-feeding that gives a built-in cuddle!
  • Give yourself time to relax and enjoy your baby - this time will never come back again.
  • Learn to enjoy the little things such as first smiles, the way he holds your finger and the little sounds baby makes to you... not to mention the quiet when he stops crying!
  • Allow some time each day for baby to stretch, kick and roll around on a blanket. Your baby's intelligence and awareness develop faster in the first year than ever again. So he needs lots of colourful things to look at and play with.
  • Talk and sing to your baby - that's how a child begins to learn our language! Speak gently. Loud music can permanently damage a baby's hearing, so keep it soft.
  • Even at a few weeks babies can enjoy brightly coloured books. Give her different shapes to feel and hold.
  • Talk to her about whether things are big or small, fat or thin rough or smooth.
  • Play little games with your baby, right from its second or third month.Peek-a-Boo and clapping hands, or Round-and-Round-the-Garden-like-a-Teddy Bear are old favourites. You will be surprised how quickly your baby will join in.
