Sisters of Bethany

The Sisters of Bethany are a community of women living in Southsea.

We are ordinary women of the Church of England from a variety of backgrounds.

We are a community of prayer.

Prayer is our main work.

We join together in praise of God.

We stand before God on behalf of the world, to bring before him the needs and sufferings, the sorrows and joys of all mankind.

We pray daily for the unity of Christians.

You are welcome to share in our times of worship and prayer.

We have a programme of monthly Quiet Days led by a variety of conductors – see our web-site.

You might like to come for a day, or part of a day,  which you could spend quietly praying, reading or writing free from your normal distractions.

We can provide accommodation for those who wish to make a retreat or have a quiet holiday.

You could join a Julian Group which meets for silent prayer on alternate Thursdays.

You could join the Bethany Group which meets for discussion on alternate Mondays.

The Deaf Church meets on the first Sunday of each month.

Parishes and other groups come for away-days, committee meetings, study days etc.

We try to meet the needs of those who would like to come.

Sisters can be available to conduct Quiet Days and retreats, to be a listening-ear, to preach and give talks.

We believe that the devout life is not just for clergy and religious – it is for everyone – it is for you - it is for ordinary people and is realistic about the commitments and responsibilities of ordinary people.

As Sisters of Bethany it is important to us that Saints Martha, Mary and Lazarus of Bethany were an ordinary household of ordinary folk doing their best to live as followers of Jesus.

It is to share that experience that we invite our guests and offer our fellowship in the Community to the service of the world, the coming of the kingdom and the glory of God
