Diocese of Portsmouth

Roadmap 2022

Bishop Jonathan has invited us to look again at our diocese’s vision, as we aim to move forward with confidence in Jesus and in each other. We are asked to embrace a vision of a diocese where everyone belongs, older and younger, but in which we are intentional about prioritising the emerging generation.

Therefore, he would like us to reframe our deaneries’ existing plans for mission and ministry through the prism of a single strategic priority:

  • We deliberately prioritise our work with children, young people and young adults, to bring life-enhancing encounters with Jesus to a new generation.
  • This priority is set in the context of the provision of Anna Chaplaincy to support older people in every parish, benefice and cluster across the diocese.

The following roadmap for 2022 will ensure that our deanery and diocesan groups talk through this vision and these plans in that context:

May/June 2022 Conversation in Deaneries: a reframing of plans in the light of an integrating and focussing vision for a diocese called to Live | Pray | Serve the Kingdom; a Christian community in which all belong, in which abiding and sharing in Christ is central.
These conversations will also reflect on the revised deanery plans through the prism of:
  • creating opportunities for children, young people and young adults to have a life-enhancing encounter with Jesus Christ;
  • the provision of Anna Chaplaincy in every parish, benefice and cluster.
Deanery teams will be asked to wrestle with two questions:
  1. In this light, how will we reframe our deanery plans?
  2. And as a consequence, what variety of ministries will we require?

Our conversations will be supported through a variety of online and in-person workshops including, but not limited to :-

  • an introduction to Anna Chaplaincy and
  • Growing Faith (a Church of England vision for connecting the development of Christian faith in homes, schools and parishes)

Bishop Jonathan, Anthony Rustell, Jeff Williams, members of BST, will be available to support conversations as and when invited.

25th June 2022 Diocesan Synod will receive an update as to progress to date under this roadmap.

End July/beginning August Work on budget in light of Bishop’s Council conclusions on Budget assumptions and first draft of diocesan strategic plan.

Deaneries continue to revise their plans in the light of input from peers, BST as well as input and envisioning from workshops.
Late September/early October  Deanery Events online and in person (dates to be confirmed) to share vision and explore draft strategic plan and its accompanying financial plans, so that deaneries can affirm, develop or revise.
19th October 2022 Bishop’s Council considers feedback from Autumn events and approves the final strategic plan, budget, and financial plans to be taken forward to Synod
5th November 2022 Diocesan Synod to approve and adopt: -

  1. The diocesan vision and strategic plan.
  2. 2023 Budget and financial plans for 2024-2025.

Please reflect on the road map and if we have missed opportunities for the voices of the diocesan family to be heard, then talk to your deanery leadership teams in advance of the meetings scheduled for the end of April/beginning of May. Alternatively, please be in touch with either or both of us.
