It’s dark out – where has the moon gone? It’s in St Mary’s Church, Fratton!

It’s been to Australia, it’s been to China, it’s even been on Strictly – and now it’s in Portsmouth. Luke Jerram’s Museum of the Moon, a huge 7-metre-wide floating moon, is lighting up the church accompanied by beautiful surround sound music by award-wining composer Dan Jones. The Moon features as part of St Mary’s week-long Festival of Lights:

  • We Shine
    Thursday 17th to Wednesday 23rd November, 5pm to 9pm daily.

  • Festival of Light Lantern Parade
    Friday 18th November, 5:30pm for 6pm start.
    Leaving Victory Business Centre and travelling up Fratton Road, led by Batala Samba Band.
  • Museum of the Moon
    Thursday 17th to Wednesday 23rd November, 5pm to 9pm daily.

  • Under the Moon
    Saturday 19th November, 7pm
    A sequence of musical pieces inspired and influenced by the moon, from medieval times to modern day. Performed by Brian Moles and Becky Hill.
  • A brief guide to the Moon
    Monday 21st November, 7pm
    Led by Prof David Bacon
  • Yoga under the Moon
    Tuesday 22nd November, 7pm
    A free hour of gentle Yoga with Lila Rasche from LANO Yoga
  • Music, Spoken Word and Dance to celebrate the Moon
    Wednesday 23rd November, 5pm to 6pm and 8:30pm
    Presented by Portsmouth Poetry, with performances from Portsmouth Academy, poets Rishky and Majid, the New Theatre Royal Dancers, singer Just Lucy, and musician Omar.
