Full details of this event:

What is happening?

Our diocese is holding its fourth annual Safeguarding Conference at St Luke’s Church, Southsea, this autumn. Following the success of previous years' conferences, we remain committed to ensuring our churches and cathedral are supported to keep developing as safe places for all and want to encourage and educate all those who are involved in safeguarding. The conference is a great chance to learn and network with others involved or interested in safeguarding across the diocese.

Who is the conference aimed at?

Registration is open to any parish, cathedral or diocesan staff or volunteers who want to find out more about aspects of safeguarding, in particular, clergy, parish safeguarding officers or any volunteers who are working with children, young people and/or vulnerable adults.

When is the conference taking place?

Thursday 25th September 2025, from 9.00 to 4.00 pm.

Where is the conference taking place?

St Luke’s Church, Greetham Street, Southsea, PO5 4LH. The venue is a short walk from Portsmouth and Southsea station and has ample parking nearby.

What is on the conference agenda?

This year's safeguarding conference recognises the importance of promoting good mental health in our church communities. We have an excellent range of professional experts speaking about how to better understand people who are experiencing trauma and mental health issues. Included are practical sessions on how to help you own church be more sensitive and responsive. Come and find out more about:

  • The nature and effects of trauma
  • The theology of trauma
  • How to help your church become more trauma aware
  • Common mental health conditions
  • Understanding personality disorder
  • How to practice self-care
  • An address by Bishop Jonathan

There will be opportunities for networking throughout the day. Lunch and refreshments are included. We will have stands from Portsmouth mental health services, Inclusion drug and alcohol services and Hope into Action.

Is there a charge?

No. Registration for the conference is free to delegates from the Diocese of Portsmouth.

Are refreshments included?

Yes. Morning coffee, afternoon tea and a light lunch is provided for all delegates.
