Concert: Spanish Golden Age
The Renaissance Choir begins its 50th anniversary celebration with works by Guererro, Victoria and others from the Siglo de Oro – or the Spanish Golden Age – which gave rise to some of the greatest sacred choral music of the Renaissance.
- Saturday 28th March
- 7:30pm
- St Peter’s Church, Petersfield
At the time when the choir was founded, its repertoire included works from this period, as its founder Ray Calcraft was a lecturer in Spanish language and literature.
Our birthday commission, Songs of Hope, will have its premiere. The other principal work will be Victoria’s Officium Defunctorum.
We’ll conclude with a musical knees-up: the secular sounds from 16th-century street scenes, along with folk and drinking songs, will feature strongly.
The concert will also feature the distinguished guitarist, Zoe Barnett, with whom we have collaborated several times. She will offer a palate cleanser to the rich choral polyphony.
Conductor – Peter Gambie
With Zoë Barnett – guitar.
Full price tickets £15 until and including Saturday 21 March, then £17. Children/students: £2. Available online as well as from One Tree Books and on the door.
