Anglican Church in Zimbabwe evangelises young people

From the Council of Anglican Provinces of Africa (CAPA), Nairobi

    By Tim Chigodo

Evangelism co-ordinator, the Revd Morris Gwedegwe, told the CAPA e-bulletin that the church was focusing on all people but laying more emphasis on reaching youth. "We cannot ignore our young people if we hope to build a lasting foundation for our church," he said.

Dioceses and parishes throughout the country are being encouraged to share the good news with as many people as possible. Zimbabwe has a population of 12 million of which a third is under 25.

The Revd Gwedegwe said the involvement of young people in ministry was critical for the future growth of the church. He said both girls and boys would be trained on various church operations so that they could participate more actively in their churches.

Besides evangelisation, the church is also expanding its programmes to include HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns to reduce the spread of the disease. The church is focusing on promoting abstinence among young people and fidelity among married couples.

Just weeks ago, the provincial leadership of the Church of the Province of Central Africa (CPCA) met in Malawi to strategize a common front in dealing with HIV/AIDS.

The Most Revd Bernard Malango, the Primate of the Church of the Province of Central Africa, said the province would collaborate closely with other agencies and governments to deal with the pandemic.

Official statistics indicate that more than 200,000 people are dying from HIV/AIDS every week.
