  • Banquet of global food celebrates city’s centenary

    Chefs from the Kitchen of Hope provided guests with a banquet of food from across the globe to mark 100 years of the city of Portsmouth. Hundreds of community groups, faith leaders and city organisations gathered in the nave of St Mary’s Church in Fratton Road. The special celebration was organised by Portsmouth City of Sanctuary and included immersive drama telling the story of Pompey’s history between courses. Read more

  • Iranian Christians are praying for democracy

    Iranian Christians who are worshipping in churches in Portsmouth are sad that their country is involved in military conflict – but they wonder if it might be the best way to remove the current regime. They have found a welcome in our churches, and are especially grateful to see liturgy and song words available in their language, Farsi. Read more

  • LENT APPEAL: Chance to see Tearfund projects in Rwanda

    As part of our Bishop’s Lent Appeal for 2026, our Head of Safeguarding Emily Hassan will travel to Rwanda with Tearfund. She’ll be seeing some of the projects there that our generous contributions during Lent 2026 will be paying for. These Tearfund projects include training for church leaders in how to transform their local communities and bring them out of poverty. Read more

  • LENT APPEAL: Donations will lift families in Myanmar out of poverty

    Your donations to the Bishop’s Lent Appeal will help to support families in Myanmar, via global mission agency USPG. The charity is one of three that the bishop has chosen to support during 2026 – and in subsequent years – and their focus for Lent 2026 is an education programme that is helping those in poverty in Myanmar.   • Cathedral service confirms Dame Sarah as first female Archbishop

    The Most Rev Dame Sarah Mullally has become the first woman to be the Archbishop of Canterbury, after a service today. Bishop Jonathan was among those present in St Paul’s Cathedral for the historic moment when she was confirmed to this office. She will now be formally installed in Canterbury Cathedral in March – but legally, she is already the Archbishop. Read more

  • Bishop Jonathan enters House of Lords

    Our bishop, the Rt Rev Jonathan Frost, has become one of the 26 bishops who sit in the House of Lords. He was summoned by HM the King to take his place on the benches, as one of the most senior bishops in the Church of England. And he was formally introduced to the House of Lords on October 23.   • Bishop leads two pilgrimages to Taizé

    Bishop Jonathan has helped to lead two pilgrimages to the ecumenical Taizé Community in France - one for students from two Isle of Wight schools, and one for young adults from churches across our diocese. Read more

  • Bishops oppose ‘aggressive’ war in Gaza

    Bishop Jonathan has added his name to a statement from the Church of England’s House of Bishops about the situation in Gaza. They have cried out in protest at the plans by the Israeli government to operate a war of aggression, and have called on all sides to end the conflict that has claimed so many innocent victims already.     Bishop Jonathan has spoken of his outrage and grief after an Israeli attack on an Anglican hospital in Gaza. The missiles landed on Palm Sunday – the start of Holy Week in the Christian calendar. Read more

  • LENT APPEAL: Supporting mission in the global Church

    Some of the proceeds from the Bishop’s Lent Appeal this year will go towards the Anglican mission agency USPG. Our clergy and lay ministers had an excellent opportunity to hear more about their work during a Bishop’s Study Day held in our cathedral. Read more
