Our churches are vibrant centres of worship, care, outreach, and community life. They serve people at every stage of life, offering spiritual guidance, pastoral support, community activities, and a welcoming place for all.

Today, this vital work is made possible largely through the generosity of local people who choose to invest in the life and future of their church.

How has church funding ghanged?

Over recent decades, the way churches are funded has evolved significantly.

One important change has been the increased investment in clergy. The Church of England has worked hard to ensure that clergy receive fairer levels of support than in previous generations, including improvements to stipends and housing provision. This helps attract, support, and sustain those called to serve our communities.

At the same time, historical national funding sources that once contributed significantly to the work of the Church have diminished. As a result, local churches have become increasingly reliant on local support, much like many other Christian denominations.

How are churches supported today?

The strength of our churches comes from the commitment and generosity of people within the communities they serve.

Regular giving from church members and supporters provides the foundation for ministry and mission. These donations help fund:

• Clergy and pastoral ministry
• Church buildings and maintenance
• Children's and youth work
• Community outreach programmes
• Worship services and church activities
• Administration and essential running costs

For many churches, several thousand pounds are needed every month to sustain this work. Because many expenses are ongoing and predictable, planned giving is one of the most effective ways to provide long-term stability and help churches plan confidently for the future.
