A NEW, temporary gateway to Europe opened up at the end of July in the heart of Copnor as volunteers at St Cuthbert’s Church laid on a virtual travel extravaganza for older people in the area.

The Holiday at Home initiative has enabled those who find it difficult to travel, perhaps because of age or health issues, to experience the culture, food and activities of three popular tourist destinations across three fun-packed days – all from the comfort of St Cuthbert’s.

France, Italy and Greece were the daily destinations enjoyed by those who signed up for the travel experience, with ‘passports’ created, issued and stamped accordingly! Activities included French boules, pizza making and building the leaning tower of Pisa from Lego. Travellers on the Greek day even managed to compete for medals in their own version of the original Olympics in Greece, based around popular board games including draughts, dominoes and Connect 4!

They were rewarded for their efforts with dishes and treats including coq-au-vin, lasagne and Spanakopita, a Greek spinach pie, prepared daily by the volunteers.

The event was developed by St Cuthbert’s volunteers (Anne Gard, Chris Caws, Anita Woodcock, Susan Leighton and Gina Sanzen-Baker, ably assisted by the ministry team at St Cuthbert’s and St Aidan’s) with Hays Travel, Southsea, contributing a generous raffle prize of a trip to Bath Christmas market.

Anne Gard, who led the team of volunteers said: “We’ve really enjoyed our first tour of Europe – the feedback has been brilliant and everyone has really entered into the spirit of things! It’s needed a lot of coordination but the teamwork of the volunteers has been exceptional yet again. We’re really grateful to everyone who has made this happen – and to Hays Travel in Southsea for their support, too.”

Joyce Best, who attended the Italian leg of the ‘trip’ said: “I’ve really enjoyed it. It’s been something a bit different and a nice change. There’s been lots of activities and a lovely lunch. We made pizzas and even tried some Italian art – I’m no Picasso but I might get something in the Tate Gallery!”

Another attendee, Di Legg, added: “It’s been fabulous, a wonderful opportunity to meet those in church I have never really met before. I have looked forward to it every day. The food has been excellent and the organising team absolutely marvellous in organising all of this for our benefit.”

The Rev Clive Gardner, vicar of St Cuthbert’s, said: “Holiday at home is a great opportunity for those who would otherwise find it difficult to get away to have a bit of a break, enjoy a whole range of activities, and connect with other people.

“It’s been a wonderful three days of virtual travel – and couldn’t have happened without the tireless efforts of our small team of amazing volunteers here at St Cuthbert’s.”
