Families flock to Christmas tree festivals
FAMILIES flocked to Christmas tree festivals hosted by churches across south-east Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
They kicked off Advent by seeing hundreds of trees that were beautifully decorated and illuminated by local schools, charities, businesses and community groups.
Many of the festivals took place on the weekend of December 5-7, which meant the festive arrangements, live music, mulled wine and mince pies gave visitors their first taste of Christmas.
Among them was the Christmas tree festival at St Cuthbert's Church, Copnor, which saw a selection of illuminated trees scattered across the nave for the 15th year in a row. They were decorated by local children's groups, charities and community groups, including the GP surgery and toddler group based in the church building.
Claire Cleaver brought her own children - Elsie, aged 7, and Bertie, aged 4 - to see the tree decorated by her group, Pineapple Tots Childcare, based in Kirby Road. It's the fifth year she's been involved.
"I bring the children from Pineapple Tots here, and my own children, each year," she said. "It's a lovely way to begin the whole Advent and Christmas period, and we love the chutneys, the raffles, the home-made cakes, and everything else. It's great that the children know the routine, and can go off and do their crafts. And there is a real community spirit around the event as well."
The 2025 festival raised money for Second Chance, a charity working with local children who may need special help. It included live music from the Pompey Pluckers, St Aidan's Choir, the Academy Voice Choir and more. And Santa also visited on each of the three days it took place.
The Brighstone Christmas Tree Festival also took place from December 3-7. It involved hundreds of decorated Christmas trees, concerts and activities on display in various venues across Brighstone and Mottistone. The trees have been decorated by schools, charities, firms and community groups. Check www.brighstonechristmastree.com for details.
The festival included decorated trees on display in St Mary's Church, Brighstone, and Mottistone Church, as well as Morris dancing, live music, handbell ringing, and a concert by local schoolchildren. The Christmas trees and decorations will remain in St Mary's church in Brighstone until January 6th, to enjoy after the festival.
The Brighstone Community Mosaic Group were also busy with their Christmas Project which is to create eight large panels on the theme of Christmas carols and songs. They were on display in the church's porch.
Dozens of decorated Christmas trees were also on display at St John's Church, Locks Heath, where the Christmas tree festival ttok place from December 4-7. Hundreds of visitors enjoyed seeing the illuminations outside, the fragrance of more than 60 Christmas trees, live music and refreshments.
Among the attractions were 12 painted murals in the corridor between the church and hall, depicting the 12 Days of Christmas. They were created by a local art group. More details of Advent and Christmas activities in St John's Locks Heath can be found here.
There was a celebration of Christmas trees in All Saints Church, Freshwater, on the Isle of Wight, from December 5-10. Dozens of decorated Christmas trees were on display, and the event also featured an opening ceremony with children from Freshwater and Yarmouth CofE Primary School, a concert by Sandown and Shanklin Band, and a cafe.
And the Alverstoke Christmas tree festival took place from December 4-7 in St Mary's Church, Alverstoke, in Gosport. It featured more than 70 Christmas trees beautifully decorated by local schools, charities, community groups and businesses, and a variety of musical performances. Visitors also enjoyed refreshments in the parish centre across the road, including hot drinks, soup, sausage rolls, snacks and homemade cakes.
