Church marks 180th anniversary with unique box project
WORSHIPPERS at St Barnabas Church, Swanmore, marked their church’s 180th anniversary with a unique project.
Groups and organisations from around the village were each invited to decorate a small box, and these contributions were ultimately brought together to form a fascinating display in the church’s foyer.
The ‘Out of the Box’ project, which also included fundraising for important repairs and improvements to the church and Paterson Centre buildings, was launched with a Harvest bring-and-share lunch. The church decided to mark its 180th anniversary as its 175th milestone took place during the Covid pandemic.
The challenge was to create 180 decorated boxes that would come together as a single montage – allowing all ages, groups, and individuals to take part. It gave the fundraising appeal both a sense of community and a way to celebrate the church’s identity in 2025.
Swanmore Pre-School, Primary School and College, all took it on as a class project, creating around 55 boxes. Those children and young people also visited the final exhibition. The church’s parent and toddler group Cygnets did the 20 ‘Swimming Swan’ boxes.
And the village’s Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts also got stuck in with around 30 boxes – lots of campfires! Some of the most unique creations were from the community, congregation and church teams – including Brandon Joyce’s amazing ‘Bell Ringers Tower’ box, Swanmore Wind Band’s box which plays music and the Church Tech Teams’ box. The project will be on display in the space between the church and Paterson Centre until mid-January, so do pop in and take a look. The doors are open until 5pm.
Churchwarden Helen Dyer said: “It was fantastic how everyone came together to embrace this project. As the wall of boxes grew, there was a real sense of the project being about the bigger picture. We all enjoyed seeing the individuality of each box as it arrived – and got know each other a little better too. I’m pleased to say the fundraising has gone really well. Thank you to everyone that made a box, sponsored a box or donated to the overall appeal.”
