Christianity and climate change

A nine-part film series produced by Tearfund featuring Katharine Hayhoe, the internationally renowned Christian climate scientist. Each episode is around six minutes long, and a study guide with discussion questions is available – making this series ideal for small groups or a short evening course.

Saving Us – Katharine Hayhoe

In this book, Katharine Hayhoe draws on her research and personal stories to show that small conversations about climate change can have astonishing results. Available on Amazon and World of Books. Her TedTalk covers similar ground and is freely available to watch online.

Jesus Died to Save the Planet

A powerful essay by Paul Kunert reclaiming the foundational truth that the gospel is good news for the whole of creation. Available to read online, download as a PDF, or purchase in print, with accompanying discussion questions, strategic steps for church leaders, and Bible study resources.

Climate Stewards

Climate Stewards is part of the A Rocha family of organisations, caring for God’s creation around the world. They have offered high-quality carbon offsets and advice since 2007, and work with individuals, charities, and churches to support their carbon reduction journey – helping you measure your footprint, reduce what you can, and responsibly offset the rest.

Operation Noah

Operation Noah is a Christian charity working with the Church to inspire action on the climate crisis. They are faith-motivated, science-informed, and hope-inspired. Their Bright Now campaign encourages churches to divest from fossil fuels and invest in climate solutions, and they also support nature-based solutions such as increasing tree cover and environmentally sensitive management of church land.

Caring for God’s Acre

Caring for God’s Acre promotes the conservation of burial sites and supports those who look after and maintain them. Many burial grounds are managed by small numbers of volunteers who want to preserve both the monuments and the wildlife – Caring for God’s Acre offers guidance on grassland management, rare species of plants, lichens on gravestones, and much more. They run a telephone and email advice service for burial ground managers.

Switched On Portsmouth

Switched On Portsmouth, run by Portsmouth City Council, helps residents in Portsmouth, Gosport, and Havant to save energy, save money, and reduce carbon. They offer free home energy efficiency measures such as air-source heat pumps, insulation, and solar panels, as well as further advice and support on reducing energy bills.

Creation Matters!

Creation Matters! is a network of individuals from churches across the Isle of Wight, seeking to encourage and inspire creation care on and around the Island. The network is distinctly Christian in its identity, and is open to anyone who shares its aim of bringing hope and practical good news through innovative community engagement. Britain Talks Climate & Nature 2025

Climate Outreach’s Britain Talks Climate & Nature 2025 is the most comprehensive exploration of how people in Britain think and feel about climate and nature – based on surveys of over 7,000 people across England, Scotland, and Wales. It shows that almost all of us are worried about climate change, that we are a nation of nature lovers, and that community-based voices are among the most trusted when it comes to climate action. For churches looking to talk about creation care in a way that resonates with their whole community, the research and communications toolkit are essential reading.

Carbon Confidence and Carbon Literacy™ courses

There are a number of different ways to gain a better understanding of the causes and effects of climate change, available in different formats to suit your availabilty:

• A free Carbon Confidence in an Hour seminar for parishes, benefices, and deaneries, using materials from the Carbon Literacy™ Project and the national Church of England environment team. The seminar helps people engage with the science of climate change and feel equipped to respond – as individuals, as communities, and as organisations.
• The Carbon Confidence in an Hour material has been adapted by the national NZC team into a study course for small groups. There is a short seminar for the course leader before starting. the material can be adapted to suit the needs and availability of the small group.
• The Carbon Literacy™ course is a four-week online course designed to guide you through the the science of climate change and the global and local effects of extreme weather on agriculture, production, migration and government, as well as signposting to various organisations and groups to help implement change. There is an optional certification fee.
